Since a nest full of peregrine falcon eggs hatched in late April, visitors to Oracle s Falconcam have seen the chicks mature from awkward bundles of fluff into spotted, adolescent fledglings. Young falcons fly for the first time approximately 42 days after hatching, which means that the four young males nesting at Oracle make their first attempt around June 1, 2007. Once they take flight, the fledglings are unlikely to return to the nest—and are expected to leave the campus permanently by July. The chicks mother Sadie, who has nested on the Oracle campus several times since 2000, will remain in the area with her mate. But her offspring, full grown when they leave the nest, will live up to the name of their species (peregrine means wanderer) and disperse up to 700 miles from the nest. Brian Latta, Staff Research Associate, Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, University of California, (UC Santa Cruz), banded the four chicks on May 15, to aid with tracking the young. The group will monitor reports of the band numbers, as it tracks the movement of peregrine falcons statewide. Each falcon is wearing two bands: A black visual identification band, and a silver Fish and Wildlife Service band. "At about 3 weeks old, their bodies are nearly full grown but they are not walking around yet," said Glenn Stewart, Staff Research Associate, Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group. "Banding at this age is safe for the chicks and makes it easy to determine gender—boys are smaller than girls." Young falcons fly fairly well but are clumsy so it is possible that one or more may fledge to the ground. If you are on campus and see a falcon on the ground, please call Oracle Security at 506-5555 so that it may be returned to a rooftop where its parents will feed and care for it. Do not remove the bird from campus. If you encounter members of the public who wish to remove a falcon from campus, please advise them of our policy.
