News Summary

With data from its Internet businesses growing at a rapid pace, Rakuten leveraged new Database as a Service [DBaaS] business processes and Oracle Exadata Database Machine to simplify its database architecture and help deliver new services faster, speed performance and increase availability to better meet the needs of its customers.

News Facts
Founded in 1997, the Rakuten, Inc. aims to become the world’s No.1 Internet services company with a mission to empower people and society through the Internet. Beyond its flagship e-commerce business Rakuten Ichiba, the Rakuten Group expanded into a diverse array of online services, including eBooks & eReading, travel, banking, securities, credit cards, e-money, portal and media, online marketing, and professional sports. Rakuten has been strengthening its systems to provide one-stop access to a wide range of those services.
With its massive business expansion, Rakuten saw a significant increase in data each day requiring a strong IT platform to supports its services and numerous transactions. As part of its system overhaul, Rakuten utilized Oracle Exadata Database Machine to help the company consolidate numerous servers starting with Rakuten member ID database servers and Rakuten Ichiba’s product database servers to quickly enhance IT resources, improve its IT flexibility and reduce operating costs associated with managing multiple servers.
Rakuten’s previous database footprint was distributed across several databases, requiring application logic for directing requests to the correct database. Consolidating and centrally managing this entire mechanism without any limitation through Oracle Exadata eliminated this routing logic and lowered maintenance requirements.
Additionally, Rakuten implemented Oracle Active Data Guard, which delivered the highest level of real-time data protection and availability, to establish a disaster-recovery environment and minimize the need for service outage when applying maintenance patches. This resulted in significant improvements in terms of performance and reliability of Rakuten’s services.
As a foundation for delivering new services faster, Rakuten chose a private database cloud environment, Oracle Exadata enabled multiple systems to be provisioned as tenant-style services, which significantly reduced the time needed to launch a new shopping service. Rakuten launched several services this year through the environment and there are plans to launch new services by the end of the year.
This project was carried out by Rakuten engineers with technical training from Oracle University and the support of Oracle Consulting. It is using Oracle Advanced Monitoring and Resolution for operational monitoring and issue resolution in mission-critical systems. Response time is 30 percent faster with stable operation even during times of high volume increases.
Oracle Exadata will also be used to create a new data warehouse for accumulating transactional data to be analyzed in a variety of ways such as by merchant and by product, providing valuable advices to merchants that is useful for improving customer service. Rakuten also plans to consolidate and standardize these multiple systems on Oracle Exadata to reduce operating load and further strengthen the rapid development of new services.
